Every day for Suicide Prevention Week 2020, we will share inspiring true stories from suicide survivors, grieving family members and mental health advocates. Our goal is to encourage others to share their stories, reach out for help, or be a beacon to those in the dark.

CAMILLE'S STORY:

I have navigated anxiety and depression for the majority of life. Growing up, I was told that I was too sensitive and too dramatic, and it made me feel like there was something wrong with me. My disordered eating began at 13, self harm began at 15, and I attempted suicide one month before my 16th birthday. Even just 15 years ago, there weren’t enough resources or support for parents to help their children struggling with mental health issues, so when I started showing signs of depression and disordered eating, my parents didn’t know what to do. I felt very alone with my struggles and began to repress my feelings, which became detrimental to my physical health. After becoming very ill around age 21, I started becoming very serious about therapy and taking care of my mental, emotional, and physical self care. I still struggle with anxiety and depression, but have been able to learn and develop healthy coping skills to help me find hope each day. I survived yesterday, I am surviving today, and I will survive tomorrow, and you will too. 

It is okay to not be okay. You will feel okay again soon, I can promise you that, because you matter and I am so glad you are still here.

My advice to grieving families or loved ones:

So often, the signs of depression and suicide are invisible. It is not your fault. Do not blame yourself. Give yourself all the time you need to grieve, and remember that healing isn’t linear. I would encourage you to see a therapist to help you heal and grieve and process all of the different emotions you are feeling with the passing of your loved one.
